Recognising the need for fit-for-purpose accommodation to meet the needs of a variety of social groups, including students, young professionals and key workers, Cardiff City Developments embarked on the redevelopment of 93-109 Richmond Road, Cardiff, to provide a variety of apartments comprising 43 one- and two-bedroom apartments alongside 22 student studio units.
The project aimed to redefine the market perception of key workers and student living.
Through close collaboration with local authorities, rigorous option testing addressed community concerns, resulting in a design that respects Victorian heritage while embracing modernity.
The masterplan successfully balances traditional Victorian references. It focused on enhancing the street by preserving the existing building line, replacing off-road parking with front gardens and incorporating refuse bin enclosures.
We introduced a central courtyard with a more contemporary aesthetic that strategically shields student units from noise from the railway line.
Each space has a modern and light interior with views of the internal courtyard that provide a peaceful living environment.
The scheme provides secure social space in the city centre and has been hugely successful in raising the level of residential offerings for key workers, academics and young professionals while elevating architectural standards in the Cathay’s area.
