As part of the first phase in the transformation of the decommissioned Uskmouth coal-fired power station into a proposed energy park, Rio Architects contributed to the design and development of a 230MW / 460MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), including a BREEAM Excellent admin and welfare block.

The building contains a WC, shower and kitchenette facilities alongside secure storage, a control room and a maintenance workshop. The building also features bespoke lighting and graphics, depicting a circuit and battery symbol within the cladding design.

The project repurposes existing infrastructure and supports the UK’s energy transition by enabling grid flexibility and resilience. We focused on integrating the BESS within the site’s industrial context, ensuring efficient use of existing assets and minimising environmental impact.

All building materials and construction goods were delivered to the site by refurbishing and reopening the existing railway line into the site to avoid adverse impacts on nearby villages and housing.
