Uplift for key site in Cathays given green light
Planning permission has been granted for the redevelopment of Medallion House. A key site along Crwys Road in Cathays, the project aims to help regenerate the area with a new mixed-use development that serves the residential and commercial needs of the community.
The development will transform the long-term empty site, creating 64 social housing homes, three private flats, 1,100m2 of refurbished commercial space and a new 750m2 community facility with a garden and café area, addressing the growing demand for more housing.
The design involves the careful retention of the ground floor structure, with the existing retail space refurbished and expanded, prioritising environmental sustainability by reducing embodied greenhouse gases and emissions from unnecessary demolition and construction. Green spaces and green roofs have been integrated into the plans, taking advantage of the building’s vast roof, as well as a new green border along Crwys Road.
With its 60+ social housing homes, fully active frontage and new commercial and community space, the development will enhance Crwys Road’s vitality, benefitting both locals and small businesses.
