Bridging the gap between the classroom and work-related experiences

Written by Sarah Wason

The Experiences of Work programme by Cardiff Commitment explores the impact of offering a full range of work-based opportunities to help establish agood sustainable careers and work-related activities within schools. It aims to raise awareness of the various learning pathways in the workforce.

It also seeks to promote equal access to opportunities and, by developing skills and knowledge, helps young people see how their school learning connects to the real world of work.

Our journey so far

Through this programme, we’ve had the opportunity to connect with schools and supply chain partners via the business forum at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf. Our journey with the forum began in September 2023. A collaborative project called the ‘Virtual Village’ was the first step – a unique initiative that saw Year 8 students take on roles in Finance, Project Management, Marketing, Design and Technology to collaboratively design a village reflecting key aspects of community life, such as retail, housing, education, health and leisure.

The school hosted networking sessions with industry partners, which provided students with a taste of the world beyond education and insights into various roles across different sectors. This experience allowed them to tap into the expertise of professionals, which they then applied to their projects.

Returning to the school for final presentations, we saw the impact of their hard work. Each pupil’s confidence shone as they presented their ideas, achievements, and reflections on areas for improvement. The day underscored why these partnerships matter. Seeing how they applied their knowledge to their projects was a real highlight of this initiative.

A platform for potential

We’re proud to support Cardiff Commitment by supporting their business forums and other initiatives, such as the Dirt is Good Green Skills Transition project, which helps young people prepare for future sustainable careers and the First Lego League Tournament which provides students with hands-on STEM experiences. Through our ongoing involvement, we support Cardiff County Council’s efforts to help the local community.

The journey continues….

By inspiring the next generation to explore their potential and develop the skills needed for future jobs, we help them shape their futures.
